Why? Because it made me look like a damn fool, that's why! Heck, [I was slaving away at the BBC on shifts for a living wage], and these people were working half as hard for ten times as much. No, that didn't sit well with me at all.

One guy was selling a simple paperback book (on used car dealing) and banking £1,000 a day - and that was ten years ago! He also hated working and so only did two hours work, three mornings each week - the rest of the time was his to do with as he pleased. He drove the very latest Ferrari and lived in an exquisite detached house in the country - all paid for by the sales of his simple book.

 These people had all discovered the awesome money-creating power of the mail-order business - and I was about to discover it for myself!

ü      Work your own hours. I used to hate having someone else tell me when to work. I am not a machine and I resent people trying to confine me to their timetable. With your own mail-order business you work exactly when you want to - or not at all if you want time off. It's up to you entirely. There is no boss, no timetable, no clock-watching. There are a few hours work each day to do, and you do it when it suits you.

ü      High mark-ups. Forget those pathetic 30% mark-ups you get in almost every other business under the sun. How does 1000% sound? That's what I make on everything I sell. Put simply, where all other businesses buy for £10 and sell for £13, I buy for £10 and sell for £100+. That makes a BIG difference to your profits!

ü      No face to face selling. I hate it, you hate it. Don't do it! In mail-order, all of your transactions are done through the post and you never meet your customers - which is probably just as well when you see the state of some of the orders you will receive!

ü     No premises. If you think staff are a pain, try renting premises! The cost is horrendous. Then there is insurance, maintenance, running costs, fire escapes, toilets for the disabled, health and safety regulations, heating...it just goes on, and on and on. I run my entire operation from a laptop and Stuart runs his from one room - these are multi-million pound operations I am talking about! You can run your entire £1,000 a day business from a kitchen table (which will be clear by lunch time.) No tedious commuting to work either!

ü      Work from anywhere in the world. My entire business is on my laptop computer. Wherever I am, that's where my business is. I am writing this letter [on my laptop on a plane to New York.]
